Modification of regional groundwater regimes by land reclamation

چکیده
JJ.Jiao Land reclamation has played a significant role in the urban development process in many coastal areas in the world. While reclamation provides valuable land, it also creates various coastal engineering, environmental and marine ecological problems. These problems directly caused by reclamation have been well recognized and widely studied. However, it has not been recognized yet that reclamation will almost certainly change the regional groundwater regime, in tum causing similar problems. This paper represents the first attempt to address the impact of reclamation on groundwater regimes. It will be demonstrated that large-scale of reclamation will increase groundwater level, modify the groundwater divide, and alter submaririe groundwater discharge to the coast. The change of groundwater conditions will cause engineering and environmental problems by modifying the infiltration capacity, flooding pattern, stability of slopes and foundations, interface between sea water and groundwater, and the coastal marine environment. This paper suggests that, for a major reclamation project, the change of the hydrogeological system in response to reclamation should be evaluated so that the disturbance to groundwater regimes and the damage to environment might be minimised. fi4mtPJmt!:tw....t~:P7jtm!t!!-m;JJt~WftEtJ±!t!! • &fl:iJ~-tE.srre~:v?~mim. ~!im.tm #~n~mo~~rn~m~m~~Et'J~M*~mA~~TM·~•~mA~ffi~~offi ~mttc&~?l$!t!!T*M~ · ~ffiJPJtfEra~msrre...t~rc~m~-JJl~~HH:PmA~TM c *~*~~~M~$~!t!!T*~Z~Wox~~~·*OO~~mtt~~~~tt!t!!T *lli · ~IIJ!t!!T **~ · ~:P!t!!T*rt.l?l#iEt'J~~ffi! o ~~~1t~im~c&~±Sr:f::tm*A ~-~ro*~Et'JPJffEtt·~~!t!!~~~~EtJ~~tt·c&~•~*WOO·c&~?~tmtm*~ ~nx:frffff51rel.ii:i~I~ra,m o ~tSJ.IIt · u9!~ · gt*ml~mimrm~ . -~~~~#il ~~nxEtJ*x!t!!~~~Et'J&~~rr~~·~~~~:vfi4m~!t!!T*M~EtJ&~·~rm~ :PitSI.IItffiJ ~~Et'J I1j~:f.ii:irc, {§ o

Analytical studies on transient groundwater flow induced by land reclamation
[1] In many coastal areas, land has been reclaimed by dumping fill materials into the sea. Land reclamation may have a significant effect on groundwater regimes, especially when the reclamation is at large scale. Analytical studies on the impact of land reclamation on steady-state ground water flow conditions were conducted previously, but transient analytical solutions are not yet available. T...

Land reclamation has played a significant role in the urban development process in coastal areas in many countries. Over the last 20 years, land reclamation has gained much popularity especially along coastal areas of the south and east China due to rapid development of industry and urbanization. While reclamation provides valuable land, it also creates various engineering, environmental and ec...
متن کاملModeling the influences of land reclamation on groundwater systems: A case study in Shekou peninsula, Shenzhen, China
a r t i c l e i n f o Land has been reclaimed along the coastal areas in many parts of the world to meet the growing demand for houses and other land use. Over 15 km 2 of land has been reclaimed around the Shekou peninsula, Shenzhen, China. Land reclamation may have significant influences on groundwater systems but this problem has not been adequately studied. Using FEFLOW (Diersch, 2005), a th...
متن کاملQuantitative and qualitative analysis of groundwater affected by land use change
Compared to surface water, groundwater resources are the primary source of water supply in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran, hence the importance of the management of these resources . In this regard, we assessed the effects of landuse changes on the qualitative and quantitative status of groundwater resources in Eshtehard region, Iran. Through processing and analyzing the satellite images, ...
متن کاملMetal concentrations and mobility in marine sediment and groundwater in coastal reclamation areas: a case study in Shenzhen, China.
The concentrations of metals in the buried marine sediment and groundwater were differently affected by land reclamation. Nine metals (V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in sediment and coastal groundwater from reclamation areas in Shenzhen were examined. The gradually decreased concentrations (V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn) in sediment and relatively higher concentrations (V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and...
